Egypt denies troops trying to clean up the Tahrir Square

CAIRO (Reuters)-Egypt said Monday's troops intervened in the Central streets of Cairo, where 33 people have been killed in the fighting for three days, to protect the Ministry of the Interior, not to remove the demonstrators from nearby Tahrir Square.

Police and military police charged the demonstrators, using tear gas and batons, in the square Sunday, the second day of violence that has flared in the first elections since the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak in February.

Abbas said the Interior Ministry has formally requested protection from the army. The same protection will be offered to protesters at the Tahrir if they ask for, he added.

"If protesters want protection from thugs in the square, we will put troops are responsible for maintaining the danger from the square," he added, referring to the "thug" that protesters said the rent by opponents of the purpose of anti-Mubarak's rebellion.
